How do artists participate?
Smartspaces.org invites artists to join the community and create an online Artist Profile with images and examples of their work. Artists and curators in the community, in turn, invite more artists to join.
Can any artist participate?
No. Our mission is to bring art the public, start conversations about art, and serve as a staging ground for emerging artists; Smartspaces is therefore limited to artists without major gallery representation. In our start-up phases, we are also limited to artists living in the New York City area.
How do you choose which art gets shown?
Smartspaces organizes a rotating team of curators to select art for available windows. Our curators may be artists, teachers, arts professionals, gallery owners, or members of the local community. Just as Smartspaces creates a new model for displaying art, this dynamic curating model allows a diversity of artistic opinions to transform the city's landscape.
How do you find empty spaces?
Smartspaces has a network of participating properties who keep us updated as spaces become (temporarily) available. These spaces are typically between tenants or new developments approaching completion.
How do you install the art?
Smartspaces works with professional local art handlers to coordinate art pickup and installation. Does Smartspaces sell art?
No. Smartspaces simply provides exposure and a conduit between artists and potential buyers. Art is clearly labeled and anyone interested in purchasing art can find artist contact information at Smartspaces.org.
Does it cost anything?
No. Smartspaces participation is free for both artists and property owners. How is Smartspaces funded?
Smartspaces is a nonprofit organization funded by grants and donations from corporations and individuals. We are a fiscally sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.
How can I get involved?
There are many ways to participate in Smartspaces. If you're interested in learning more, send us an e-mail.
